Santhanam

Santhanam is yellow paste applied as a dot on the forehead between the two eyebrows. It is made from sandalwood which is known for its fragrance. By placing the santhanam pottu here, the devotees is reminded that he has in him the Eye of Siva (Wisdom Eye) and can bring it to the fore, through the grace of Lord Siva with faith and practice. It is to remind the devotee that should strive harder in this spiritual life to open the Eye of Siva in him so that he can have vision of God and become one with God. This is the goal of every Hindu.

Viboothi

This also called Thrineeru, Thriuman and Pasitham. It is holly ash used in religious worship in Hinduism. The Viboothi ash is generally the residue of cow dung that is burned together with cow's milk, curd & cow's urine. Some herbs are also added the whole mixture, burnt until only the ash remains. The ash has several symbolic meanings, place on the forehead of devotees. It cover the more of spiritual third eye of Hindu belief that sees development of mystic insight as the path to Self-realization. It is also reminder of one's morality since bodies are cremated being only temporary vessel of the soul.

Normally, Viboothi is picked up with three finger of right hand and applied such that three lines form across the forehead. This indicate the Trinity or function of Lord Shiva in his manifestation as Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra (creator, Sustainer - Protector and Dissolves)

Sambrani / Dhoop

Sambrani is a resin obtain from a tree. The dried sambrani is sprinkled on pieces of burning coal. Sambrani is burnt and wave the flame in front of deity in a clock-wise direction three times. This is performed both at temples and in the house during pooja.
